Nestled in the Heart of Orléans BIA, The Tortilla Maker of Canada is bringing a true taste of Mexico to the community. As the first traditional Mexican tortillería in the National Capital Region, this family-owned business is dedicated to crafting authentic corn tortillas using an age-old process that has been passed down for generations.
Owner Miguel Ángel Jiménez Reyes first had the idea for The Tortilla Maker of Canada during the pandemic lockdowns when he realized there was no local source for authentic corn tortillas made through the traditional nixtamalization process. Recognizing a gap in the market and a demand for truly authentic tortillas, he set out to bring a taste of home to the Heart of Orléans BIA.
Since opening in August 2023, The Tortilla Maker of Canada has quickly evolved to meet customer demand, expanding beyond fresh corn tortillas to offer a full taquería menu. Whether you’re craving tacos de canasta, gorditas, nachos, or tamales, everything is made fresh in-house using their signature tortillas, tortilla chips, corn dough, and original salsas. They’ve even begun supplying tortillas and chips to local restaurants, caterers, and grocery stores, ensuring more people can enjoy authentic Mexican flavours right here in the Heart of Orléans BIA.
One of the things that makes The Tortilla Maker of Canada stand out is the immersive experience it offers. Customers can watch the entire process of turning maize kernels into tortilla dough using water, heat, and food-grade lime (calcium hydroxide)—an ancient technique known as nixtamalization. Seeing the steaming hot tortillas come fresh off the press, feeling their aroma, and tasting their rich flavour is an experience unlike any other in the region.
Beyond their dedication to authenticity, Miguel and his team have a strong commitment to the community. Their shop also carries a variety of Mexican cheeses, locally made bakery products, and sauces, supporting other small businesses along the way.
For Miguel, opening in the Heart of Orléans BIA was an easy choice. Having lived in the area for years and raised his family here, he felt a strong connection to the community. The vibrant small business scene, with the support of the Heart of Orléans BIA, made it the perfect place to establish his family business.
“The BIA has been the backbone of small businesses in Orléans,” Miguel says. “They have been our first point of contact, a bridge to the community, and a big supporter from the very beginning.”
Running a growing business doesn’t leave much free time, but when he does get a chance to relax, Miguel loves to sing classic Mexican songs, with a repertoire spanning the 1940s through the 1990s. Whether in the kitchen or behind a microphone, his passion for sharing Mexican culture shines through.
If you haven’t yet visited The Tortilla Maker of Canada, now is the perfect time to stop by and experience their fresh, authentic Mexican offerings. Located at 2003 St. Joseph Blvd. Unit A, they’re ready to welcome you with delicious tortillas, tacos, and more!
