Located along the Ottawa River, Petrie Island Canoe Club (PICC) has become a cornerstone of the East Ottawa community. Founded by Sarah Kennedy, the club offers a variety of affordable, high-quality paddling programs for all ages and skill levels. With a mission to provide local access to nature and promote healthy living, PICC has become a hub for recreational and competitive paddling alike.
Sarah’s love for canoeing stems from her childhood in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, where she grew up in a thriving canoe club environment. After moving to Ottawa, she wanted to bring similar experiences to local kids. Established in 2013 as a program under the Rideau Canoe Club, PICC became an independent entity in 2016, continuing its mission as a not-for-profit community organization.
“I wanted East Ottawa kids to have access to the same amazing experiences I had growing up,” says Sarah. The club’s success is attributed to its community-driven approach, hard work, and support from local figures like the late Al Tweddle and local councillors.
PICC offers programs for children, adults, and individuals with special needs, from introductory camps to competitive teams. Highlights include:
Children’s Programs: Kiddie Canoe, Canoe Kids, Regatta Ready, and Sprint.
Adult Programs: Special Olympics Paddling, Paralympic Paddling, Dragon Boat, and Masters Sprint.
Special Initiatives: Indigenous children can join the Sprint program at no cost.
“We provide all the necessary equipment, and our staff is bilingual and highly qualified,” Sarah shares. “It’s about fostering a sense of belonging and helping everyone grow.”
Sarah chose Petrie Island for its perfect blend of natural beauty and accessibility. “It’s the best spot for a canoe club,” she says, highlighting the area’s peacefulness and connection to the Ottawa River. The Heart of Orléans BIA has a strong sense of community, and PICC fits right in.
Outside of her work at PICC, Sarah enjoys reading, playing sports, and spending time with her large family. She plays both the violin and piano, loves nature, and is committed to sharing her passion for outdoor activities with others—especially kids.
Petrie Island Canoe Club continues to grow, with plans to expand its offerings. Whether you’re new to paddling or a seasoned athlete, there’s a place for you at PICC.
